At its inception, Horticulture was a weekly magazine for greenhouse growers, florists, professional gardeners and nursery owners. This, the third issue of volume 1, was published on December 17, 1904. It offers us a glimpse of gardening life in the early 20th century through its:

• Critique (mostly unfavorable) of the landscaping at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (better known as the St. Louis World’s Fair), which had just ended

• Black and white photographs depicting gardens, plants and notable people
• Notes from garden clubs, correspondents and plant collectors across the United States, touching on topics such as the need to care for urban trees and the spread of invasive Lymantria dispar moths through the Northeast—challenges the horticulture community still wrestles with today
